At Terminal, we’ve assembled a team of specialists to enable the success of all of the members at each of our campuses. We recently had the opportunity to talk with Mariah Alonzo, one of the individuals supporting the members of our Vancouver campus.

Terminal: Tell us about your career so far, and can you walk us through your journey to joining the Terminal team?

I started my career at McDonald’s where I worked my way up over 10 years from a crew member to Assistant General Manager. Following that, I wanted to try something new and shift gears joining a startup named Bit Stew Systems as their Receptionist. A year later, GE Digital acquired Bit Stew and my role changed to Office Manager. When my journey with GE Digital came to an end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise! I came across a job posting on LinkedIn for Terminal and the company and its values looked like a perfect alignment for me. The recruitment and interview process was fast, personalized and I knew it was a place I had to work! The Terminal onboarding process has been one of the best experiences I’ve had to date.

Terminal: I understand you had multiple job offers and ultimately made the decision to join Terminal. What is one thing you think the Terminal team does really well and drew you to working with us?

Terminal does a great job of ensuring I’m successful in my role by providing all of the tools and resources I need. What drew me to working with Terminal was the fact that they saw my potential and I was a great fit in the team. The Terminal team has been so welcoming and supportive which made my onboarding process very smooth.

Terminal: What’s a win you’ve celebrated recently (work-related or otherwise) that we can share with the community and can you explain it?

I completed my Certified Associate in Project Management last month and I’m looking forward to taking the exam in the next couple of months. The program has taught me a lot about project management, including procurement, stakeholders, scheduling, integration, risk, scope, quality and cost which all help me tremendously in my role with Terminal.

Terminal: Terminal is a fast-growing startup. I am curious why you choose a startup having come from a largely corporate background and what you enjoy about it?

I like the fact that I’m part of the incredible growth at Terminal. Our team feels like a family, and I love that we truly win as a team!
Terminal: What excites you most about working in the Vancouver office?
I like the fact that it’s in downtown is central to almost everything. It’s been an exciting journey to witness and be part of the renovations and upgrades.

Terminal: People and experiences greatly shape our lives. Who inspires you and why?

I get my inspiration from my mom. She has taught me to work hard, give back and stay humble.

Terminal: What are some of the books, podcasts, and resources that you love and that inform your work?

I haven’t read a book recently but I am working on reading some books that were recommended by previous company leaders. “The Culture Code: The Secret of Highly Successful Groups”, “Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos and Luck — Why Some Thrive Despite All” and “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Became Even More Successful”.

Terminal: What’s one thing you can’t do but really wish you could?

I wish I enjoyed spicy food like most people but I can’t handle the heat!

Terminal: What is the craziest item on your “bucket list”?

I have a fear of heights so I would like to try ziplining or taking a ride in a helicopter which probably isn’t the craziest thing to do but they are for me!

Terminal: What do you like to do when you aren’t at work?

I love catching up on my favourite reality TV shows like Below Deck and Real Housewives of Atlanta/New York/Beverly Hills. I also try to fit in time to be active and exercise and spend time with family and friends on the weekends.

Terminal: You have traveled a fair bit. What is your favourite country to date and what is next up on your roster?

Hawaii and Ireland are my favourites to date. I enjoyed a relaxing trip to Hawaii for my birthday a few years ago and was enamored by the beautiful beaches. Ireland was fun and I got to try a blood sausage for the first time! Next up on my roster is the Philippines which is my birthplace. I also have a non-refundable vacation package to Cancun waiting for me.

Terminal: What is one thing you are looking forward to doing this summer?

I’m looking forward to checking out the Chilliwack Sunflower Festival and trying out new places to hike.
