Most Popular Coding Languages in 2023

Software developers hold one of the 25 most common jobs in America and predictions indicate that software development will grow much faster than other industries over the next ten years, at an astounding 25% growth rate.

At the same time, the labor shortage in America continues to affect all industries, including software development. As a result, there’s a huge demand for people in this industry, causing more jobs and higher wages for software developers.

Whether you’re looking to learn to code for fun, you’re seriously considering training to become a software developer, or you’re an experienced coder who wants to stay up-to-date on the latest languages, you’ll want to add the top programming languages to your repertoire.

But in an industry advancing at breakneck speed, it can often be hard to tell which coding languages make the most sense for your particular situation. We’ve done the research for you on the most popular coding languages in 2023.

JavaScript

Most software developers have heard about this one – it’s unchallenged as one of the top most popular coding languages, perhaps the single best programming language to learn. JavaScript manages the behavior of web pages, including graphics, buttons, maps, and so on. It’s used for web servers, mobile apps, game development, and web development.

Additionally, JavaScript is incredibly easy to learn. Most developers can pick it up quickly and play around with it without much prior coding experience. Because it’s so easy to learn and so popular among software developers, many resources for learning it are available online.

Python

Python is another popular coding language that’s great for beginners. It’s used for data science, app development, and back-end development. Additionally, developers using it to create programs can use various styles of programming, such as object-oriented, functional, and reflective styles. Python was used to develop popular platforms like YouTube and Google Search, thus proving itself one of the best coding languages to learn.

As a very versatile language, Python includes a broad library of basic tasks and commands. This versatility makes it one of the most in-demand programming languages in 2023, for beginners and advanced programmers alike.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language, or HTML, formats text – like paragraphs, links, headings, and sections – making it appear a certain way when you view a website. It’s used for website development and maintenance, as well as web documents.

HTML isn’t a particularly versatile language; it can’t do much beyond the creating and structuring of text. However, text is essential to many web pages, which is why HTML remains a popular coding language for software developers.

Java

As an object-oriented programming language, Java helps develop objects that encompass data and functions and are used to structure programs and applications. Java is used for e-commerce, app development, and finance.

The ability to securely handle huge amounts of data is what sets Java apart from other programming languages – and makes it ideal for online finance and industries that require it. For example, Java is often used in industries like the stock market, billing, and banking.

However, Java can do more than just handle large amounts of data – it’s incredibly versatile and can run on a huge variety of operating systems, making it deserving of a spot among the most popular programming languages.

Go

Go was created by Google in 2007 and, since then, it’s become one of the fastest-growing programming languages. Its efficiency and simplicity make it stand out among others. It’s used for big data, audio/video editing, and system/network programming.

Go is able to manage multiple processes simultaneously – and its comprehensive vocabulary makes it possible to display greater amounts of data compared to other programming languages. With excellent management elements and memory safety, Go is one of the most dynamic and functional languages you can learn.

C#

C#, a popular improvement on C++, is another object-oriented language that’s used for game development and VR, as well as desktop, web, and mobile apps. Since it was released in 2002, C# has become steadily more popular as a general-purpose coding language. Because it’s one of the best coding languages for building mobile apps and games, C# will likely continue to grow in popularity in the future.

Additionally, due to the fact that it’s been around for a couple of decades, there are many resources available for programmers who want to learn this language.

There are many different reasons to learn different coding languages. As a result, the most popular coding languages might not be the ones you should learn, though popularity can be a good factor to help you choose. Be sure to take your current situation into account. For example, if your dream job requires back-end development, you should probably choose to learn Python rather than HTML. Also, remember that you can choose a specific job or career direction based on the coding language you most enjoy.
